West Virginia State Parks officials have initiated a significant expansion of mountain bike trails at Cacapon Resort State Park, marking a pivotal development in the state’s outdoor recreation offerings. The $3.5 million project will introduce 35 miles of professionally designed mountain biking trails, further establishing Cacapon as a premier destination for both hikers and cyclists in the region.
Brett McMillion, director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. “This is an incredible day for Cacapon Resort and West Virginia as we continue to invest in our world-class parks system,” McMillion said. “We are excited to get started on this ambitious project and look forward to all of the ways it will improve the experience at Cacapon Resort and attract new people to come and visit our beautiful state.”
This project aims to diversify Cacapon Resort’s trail offerings, making use of the park’s natural mountain landscape to cater to riders of all skill levels. In addition to the new bike trails, improvements will include bike-specific amenities for park visitors and local communities, as well as youth-oriented biking facilities. A signature trail is also being planned to entice riders from across the state and beyond.
Construction is planned in two phases, with the first phase now underway under the guidance of Greenstone Trailcraft. The second phase is expected to kick off in the spring of 2025, with a targeted completion date in 2026.
This trail expansion is part of a larger commitment to enhancing the West Virginia State Parks system, which has seen over $250 million in improvements in the past seven years. For more information about Cacapon Resort State Park and West Virginia State Parks, visit WVstateparks.com.
