WVU’s Guy Hornsby named Educator of the Year by NSCA

MORGANTOWN — Guy Hornsby, an assistant professor of coaching and performance science at West Virginia University, has been named the Educator of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Hornsby was one of seven professionals recognized with Peer Awards by the NSCA for outstanding achievements in their fields. Nominated by the NSCA community, recipients will be honored at the national conference in Baltimore in July.

The Educator of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual who has made noteworthy contributions to education and clinical practice within strength training and conditioning.

“This award is particularly special because the committee leans heavily on student work with the faculty member,” Hornsby said. “Therefore, it is an achievement that I very much could not have attained without the dedication and hard work of so many of our coaching students that I have had the opportunity to work with over the past nine years here at WVU.”

Hornsby’s role involves overseeing strength and conditioning and applied sport science within the coaching and performance science program. He coordinates a school board-funded graduate assistantship program that places head strength and conditioning coaches in three local high schools. Additionally, he has served as the NSCA Director for West Virginia and currently chairs the NSCA Weightlifting Special Interest Groups.

Hornsby has presented at prestigious conferences such as the NSCA National Conference, NSCA Coaches Conference, and the NSCA Advanced Periodization Virtual Clinic. He has contributed a chapter on “Exercise Technique” to the upcoming fifth edition of the NSCA’s Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning. He has also authored or co-authored several book chapters and co-authored *Strength and Conditioning in Sports: From Science to Practice*. His research focuses on understanding training processes for strength-power athletes and various aspects of athlete monitoring.

In addition to Hornsby, the NSCA honored other professionals:

  • Tara De Leon received the Personal Trainer of the Year Award.
  • Justin Loudon was named High School Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year.
  • Katie R. Hirsch earned the Nutritional Research Achievement Award.
  • Helen Binkley was awarded the Sports Medicine/Rehabilitation Specialist Award.
